Under the Roman practice of addictia,
if someone defaulted on a debt, he'd
spend sixty days at the home of the
creditor--bound in chains with heavy
weights. At the end of those sixty
days, if the debt was still unpaid, the
creditor could either sell the debtor
into slavery or hack him into pieces
with a sword.
Britain's present royal family was
